Can anyone explain how and why the difference between the nominal spread and the Z-spread changes with the shape of the spot curve of a security?

For example, when the spot curve is flat, there is no difference between the nominal spread and the Z-spread and when the spot curve is upward sloping, the Z-spread is larger than the nominal spread and vice versa for a downward sloping spot yield curve.
